How Do I Compare Laws in Multiple States?
You can use the Law Comparison Tool to compare employment and labor laws across multiple states and optionally include national laws.
Using the Comparison Tool
- Hover over the left navigation menu and click the Comparison Tool tab.
Step 1: Select States
- Choose at least two states for comparison.
- Optional: Turn on the Include National Laws toggle if you want to add federal-level regulations to your comparison.
Step 2: Select Topics
- Choose the topic(s) you want to compare across the selected states.
Step 3: Select Display Format
- Choose how the comparison results should be displayed:
- States Across Top (States appear in columns, topics in rows)
- Topics Across Top (Topics appear in columns, states in rows)

Click Create to generate the comparison.

Scroll down to view the topic comparisons.
Additional Features
Download the Comparison Report
- Click the Download button in the top-right corner to export the comparison as a Word file.
Switch Views
- Click between States Across Top and Topics Across Top in the top-right corner to adjust the view format.
Troubleshooting & Additional Help
Comparison tool not loading results? Refresh the page and try again. If the issue persists, clear your browser cache and retry.
Can’t find a specific state or topic? Ensure that the topic is available in the system. If a topic is missing, consider submitting a request through the Request a Resource feature on the Resources page.
